Tuesday June 24, 2014 – Renowned political columnist, Prof Makau Mutua, has blasted members of the Kikuyu community for using their mother tongue during social gatherings in the US, saying that is one way of perpetuating tribalism.
Speaking on Saturday during the Second Annual Akamba Cultural Festival of New England held at the Best Western Hotel in Woburn, near Boston, Makau who is a Distinguished Law Lecturer at Buffalo Law School in US said Kikuyus in the US have organized themselves in tribal groupings and they do not want to associate with other Kenyans.
While responding to questions from journalists who attended the function, Mutua also lambasted Kikuyu pastors in Boston and New York who preach in their mother tongue, knowing very well that there are many communities who attend their service.
“If that is what they are doing, it is not right. If you are preaching to me and then you exclude me based on my tribe or other factors, then you are not preaching the real God. But it is also wrong for you to do the same. If you find someone taking bad medicine that will kill them, would you follow suit and take the same?” Makau posed.
Makau also said Kikuyus are the ones who divide Kenyans in the US, because, the Kamba, Luos and Luhyas are currently united but Kikuyus brag that they are superior to others.
