Sunday July 20, 2014 – The Government of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, William Ruto, has cast aspersion on the authenticity of Degrees and Diplomas offered at the United States International University (USIU).
This is after the matter was raised in the National Assembly by Machakos Town MP, Victor Munyaka, following complaints that the university could be offering fake Degrees and Diplomas.
A number of graduates from the university questioned the validity of their papers after failing to secure jobs years after graduation and being turned away by potential employers because of USIU papers.
In response, Education Principal Secretary, Bellio Kipsang, and the Commission for University Education (CHE) Chief Executive Officer, Prof. David Some, confirmed that USIU had breached the University Act and could be offering unaccredited Degrees and Diplomas, prompting Speaker Justin Muturi to order the Departmental Committee on Education Science and Technology to carry out further investigations into the matter.
According to Uhuru/ Ruto’s Government through Education Ministry, USIU has no post of the Chancellor to confer genuine Degrees and Diplomas. Besides, the owners of the university are also not fully known by the Kenyan Government.
It is thought that the university is owned by a group of Americans, with an ex-US Ambassador to Kenya, Aurelia Brazil, listed as Director of the University, business mogul Manu Chandaria as chairman of the board and Brown as Vice Chancellor.
